The Art of Trust Building: Tips and Techniques for Success

coaching May 03, 2023

Building trust is an essential component of any healthy relationship. It's a topic that's particularly important in professional settings, where trust is crucial for effective collaboration and teamwork.

Let me start with a personal story. A while ago, I went to buy a car because my commute had become unbearable. During the car shopping experience, the salesman and I chatted about what I was looking for and the different types of vehicles that were available. When we went for the test drive, I was pretty much ready to buy the car right there. But when I got out of the car and said I was interested in buying it, the salesman's response stopped me in my tracks. With a tone that spoke he was trying to sell me something, he said, "Trust me. I got your back." All the rapport he had spent building was gone in one five-second exchange.

This experience taught me that trust is a fundamental aspect of any relationship and requires constant vigilance to maintain.

So, how can we build trust with others? Here are some practical steps you can take:

  • Be reliable: Consistently following through on commitments and promises is crucial for building trust. If you say you will do something, make sure to follow through.

  • Be honest: Honesty is the foundation of trust. Be truthful and transparent in your communication and actions.

  • Show empathy: Empathy and active listening show that you care about the other person's feelings and perspectives. This helps to build trust.

  • Maintain confidentiality: Keeping sensitive information confidential is an essential component of building trust.

  • Demonstrate competence: Showing your competence and expertise in your field builds trust in your abilities.

  • Be consistent: Consistency in your behavior and communication helps to build trust over time.

  • Apologize when necessary: If you make a mistake, apologize sincerely and take responsibility for your actions.

  • Avoid gossiping: Avoid talking negatively about others, especially when it is not constructive or helpful.

Building trust is a gradual and ongoing process. It requires consistent effort and a genuine desire to create and maintain a positive relationship with the other person. By following these steps, you can build and maintain trust in any relationship, whether it's with your colleagues, clients, or partners.

Remember, trust is like a freshly potted plant that needs to be nurtured. So let's start growing our plants today. If you have any other tips or experiences on building trust, feel free to share them in the comments below.
